Types/Sizes of Folding Bikes
Folding bikes are bicycles that can be folded to approximately half of their normal size. They are perfect for people are short on space, need portability and are often times the ideal bike for someone who never thought they needed one until they started thinking about all the possibilities a folding bike offers.
The majority of the time, folding bicycles are categorized according to wheel size. Some bikes have wheels smaller than 12" in diameter, while others are full-size mountain bikes and 700c wheeled commuter bikes and hybrids.
The Most Popular Sizes of Folding Bikes:
16" Folding Bikes
A 16inch wheel folding bike is a great choice if you are very tight on space and travel shorter distances. This can be an ideal size if you need to ride to or from a train station, or have a couple of miles or less to travel to reach your destination. Because of the smaller wheel size, it can take a little more pedaling and energy to travel the same distance when compared to a larger wheeled bike. Fortunately, 16" wheeled bikes are now available with multiple speeds which makes cycling longer distances less of a challenge.
The seat-tube and stem are usually very tall, to elevate the rider into a comfortable position above the smaller 16" wheels. The difference in the bike geometry can take a little while to get used to due to the smaller tires, straight handlebars and taller stems.
A 16" bike is very portable and is stored in tight spaces such as small airplanes, boats, dorm rooms, a closet, and the trunk of your car. Some people always keep one in their vehicle for a dual purpose allowing you to take a bike ride wherever you are and if there is ever car trouble, and you have to walk for assistance - you can now find help much sooner on your bike.
If the surfaces that you will be riding on are rough, or there are many curbs or potholes that you will come across, the 16 inch wheel size is not going to be the best choice because it will be a bumpy ride.

20" Folding Bikes
If you think of a normal BMX bike, and look at the wheels, 99% of the time, the bike has 20" wheels on it. If you have seen the tricks and large variety of terrain ridden on 20inch wheels, you know that they can handle a lot. The same holds true for 20" folding bikes which can be a lot of fun to ride and are available in a variety of styles. The distance covered per rotation is a lot better than on a 16" wheel bike and the bikes are safer than their smaller wheeled brethren when it comes to rough roads, curbs and potholes. The turning is agile and very responsive, with fast acceleration from a complete stop. As with the 16" size bike, the seatpost and stem will be taller to place you in an optimal riding position, but it is not as exaggerated as on the smaller wheel size bike.
Most 20" folding bikes have multiple gearing, normally with an easy to use grip-shifter and can be comfortably ridden for longer distances. The 20" wheel size is still small enough to be stored nearly anywhere and can be carried on a bus or train with no problem.
20" folding bikes are one of the most popular sizes because they allow you to ride on a variety of terrain, travel longer distances, are comfortable and portable. Breezer Folding Bikes are a great choice for a 20" folder, as are the Melon Bikes and the colorful Puma Pico.

24" Folding Bikes
A 24" wheel size folding features some of the best of both worlds when it comes to portability and performance. The bike has a wheel diameter that is in-between a 20" BMX sized wheel and a full size 26" tire. The bike will be very agile when making turns and maneuvering through the city streets thanks to the slightly smaller size, while at the same time, is large enough to roll over the potholes and other obstacles that city streets throw in the way of a rider. A great bike in this category that we carry is the Puma Disko.
A 24" folding bicycle will usually come with more than one speed. This type of bike can be ridden for short and long distances and can climb and descend hills with much more ease and stability than the smaller sized folding bikes. The bike will feel nearly the same as a full-sized 26" wheel but will accelerate more quickly and turn more quickly with the smaller wheel size.

26" Folding Bikes - Full Size
A 26 inch wheel folding bike has the same size tires that are found on the majority of adult bikes. The 26" folding bikes that we carry are designed by Montague and are available under both the Montague and Swiss bike names. Montague bikes have a unique and patented folding design in which there is no actual break in the top-tube of the frame for when the bike is folded. Because of this, the bikes retain their rigidity and feel like a normal bike when being ridden.
The best way to look at these bikes is as a high performance bike that as an added bonus - folds. With a 26" wheel, all the parts are standard and the bicycles can handle a lot. As a sign of durability, the Paratrooper Folding Bike is used by the United States Paratroopers in the field of duty.
A 26" folding bike is still portable and folds to about half its normal size. Many private Pilots use Montague bikes, as do boaters and campers. This way, when reaching your destination, an entirely new ability to explore exists for you. If you want to ride into the local town for dinner - no problem - want to hit the mountain bike trails - also no problem.
For bike commuters, a 26" folding bike can be the perfect choice. It can easily be carried onto a train, or bus and once you reach your destination can be folded and brought into your workplace to store in a closet or corner, keeping it safe and secure.
Best of all, you don’t need a second bike for your “non-commute" riding because these high-performance bikes can be taken out on all day weekend excursions and some models are ready for extreme riding on mountain bike trails.
26" folding bikes finally make it possible to easily transport a full-sized bike in the trunk of you car - pure genius!

700c Folding Bikes - 28" Wheel Size
With the introduction of 700c folding bikes, an entirely new world has opened up to bike commuters and avid cyclists. A 700c wheel bike (28" wheel size) has the same diameter wheel that is found on road bikes (think Lance Armstrong style). Our 700c folding bikes are more hybrid in style, so the diameter is the same as the road bikes, but the rim and tire are slightly wider than a road bike wheel, but narrower than a mountain bike tire, hence the term hybrid or trekking bike.
The 700c wheel will roll fast, it is larger than a 26inch size and each rotation of your pedaling will make the bike cover more distance and at a faster pace. The bikes are designed mainly for road riding, but can also be taken on some “light" trails, such as rails to trails pathways. 700c folding bikes are agile, smooth rolling and fun to ride. You can go fast when you want to and can take these bicycles out on very long rides.
The Montague Bikes that we carry with 700c wheels have the same patented frame design that we mentioned above and ride the same as a normal, non-folding bike. The Montague Commuter bicycles feature high-performance quality, and the fact that they fold is a huge bonus. Once you ride one of these bikes, you will want to take it with you everywhere - and now, you can!
